Aquarium lighting
Aquariums are one of the best choices for people who like keeping pets. Beautiful fishes adorn their rooms in all grandeur. But proper planning is required if you want to ensure that your aquarium looks its best. Whether you are planning for a guppy aquarium or a goldfish aquarium, it takes a lot of effort to create a good looking aquarium because a lot of thought has to be given to the kind of fish that goes into the aquarium, if the two fishes are compatible or not (you would not want to wake up one morning and find that one fish was eaten up by the other) , if the kind of plants and the aquarium lighting or the reef that you have given the fish goes well with it or not. It also takes a great deal of effort to maintain it, feeding the fish etc. all the effort goes to waste if the lighting in the aquarium is not correct, because it simply does not look good otherwise.
There are many things that can be added to the aquarium in addition to the fishes to make it look like home to the tiny cute ones. The major parts of an aquarium are as follows:
• Filter pads or filter cartridges
• Aquarium lamp
• Air canisters
• Aquarium plants
• Filter pumps
• Impellers
Correctly choosing these parts is very important to have a healthy environment for the fish and also to have a good looking aquarium for you. The major factors that add the aesthetic value to the aquarium are the plants of the aquarium and the light for the aquarium. There are many different kinds of aquarium lamps that you can choose for your aquarium. The major kinds of lamps are as follows:
• Incandescent lamps can be used as aquarium plant lights without much ado. These lamps are easily available as these are the same lamps that are also used in homes. They are the cheapest option that is available. But the major problem with these lamps is that they become extremely hot on prolonged use and after certain time they tend to burn out. They are not advisable for use.
• Aquarium fluorescent lights are the most common kinds of lights that are used for aquarium lights that are there. They are available in many different styles and colors. There are a variety of aquarium light colors that one gets to choose from and use. Mixing up different colors of fluorescent lights also gives fascinating results in beautifying the aquarium.
• LED aquarium lighting is another powerful kind of lighting that has gained immense popularity as aquarium lighting. LED lighting is the best amongst the options available for aquarium lighting because LED lights helps a lot in cost cutting as it is the cheapest form of lighting. It also is low in the amount of heat that is generated by it. But the problem with LED lights is that these lights do not have the components of the white light that the incandescent light provides with. Since the plants in the aquarium draw their energy for photosynthesis from the light that is used to light the aquarium it is not advisable to use it for aquarium which have plants in them.
Now on the basis of the kind of water that is used and the variety of accessories the fish tank or aquarium has, the type of lighting also changes accordingly. Given below are certain kinds of aquariums that exist in the present times and the different kinds of lighting that are generally used in these kinds of aquariums:
Reef aquarium lighting is a little different than the other lighting systems that are generally used. What happens in a reef aquarium actually is that instead of plants reef is used as the accessories. The problem is that the reef takes up more oxygen and the energy requirement in case of reef is much much more than that of the normal plants. Hence the lighting requirements are not satisfied by the use of general lights with the limited spectrum. What these aquariums need is very high output (VHO) fluorescent lights which have a wide spectrum. These aquariums also work well with the metal halide aquarium lights that are easily available nowadays.
The conditions inside a salt water aquarium are different and so the salt water aquarium lights are also different which can pertain to the specific conditions that are found inside the salt water aquarium. The saltwater aquariums do not need a wider spectrum of lighting when they are fish-only tanks and the general kind of lighting like the incandescent and fluorescent lighting can do for them, but when they are reef aquariums, as discussed above, the lighting requirement change.
For fresh water aquariums there is no specific need for fresh water aquarium lights. The lights can follow the similar lighting patterns as in the saltwater aquariums. The only major change will be in the diffusion pattern of the fish tank light as the difference in water quality is seen. Aquarium light reflectors are also used along with the general lighting to accentuate the effect of lights in the aquarium.
Fish tank lighting is a little tricky and over heating or under heating, less or wide spectrum has to be properly understood and then proper adjustments have to be made to get the most out of the lighting system at hand. One must never forget that we are taking about the comfort of living beings inside the aquarium both the plants and the fixes.
There are many varieties of aquarium light fixtures that are available for different kinds of aquarium light bulbs. One can run a check on the different kinds of light fixtures available before going out for actually buying it. A good decision should be taken well before hand to avoid last minute hassles and any hasty decision that might later prove fateful for the aquarium and the fishes inside.
